Singing powerfully across themes of anxiously awaiting what time brings, he sings, “Does it get better than this? / It will or it won’t or we’ll just get used to it.” It is a weary statement but the delivery of it brings a sense of hopefulness and acceptance to it. The swaying track “The Idea” is a doting love song that has the best songwriting on the album. I know that sounds like a sly insult, but think Phoebe Bridgers, Gracie Abrahams, Lucy Dacus, and the like. I really enjoyed the guitar on this track, and where it kicks in with the drums and bass, it becomes very dynamic. “Dawn” is a perfect representation of the calmness & energy of life, switching back between the two throughout the track, creating an image of dawn & pre-sunrise, compared to later in the day when life gets busier. Later on the tracklist comes “Dusk”, and it pairs so well with “Dawn”! It’s a feeling that we all surely know on some level, and certainly helps you find some shred of happiness on a tragic occasion. “Shine” is one that Green calls the second happiest on the record, and even associates it with Circa’s Blue Sky Noise (2010) sound-wise. Yun does not shy away from getting personal in the lyrics, but her passion is amplified to new heights with her vocals and simple yet striking instrumentation. There’s so much variety in the album, both musically and lyrically, that really shows her range as a musician and songwriter in general. Her light and airy vocals, paired with various synths create such a dreamy and groovy soundscape throughout the entire album. Also, the genre-bending and mixing going on are so cool! HYPNOS is a beautiful mixture of R&B/Alternative R&B, Soul, Pop, Dancehall, and Afrobeats; and she floats in between these styles seamlessly and in a way that is so uniquely her. Hot Mulligan — Why Would I Watch Why Would I Watch is Hot Mulligan’s fourth album and it’s arguably one of their best already. Continuing the trend of their creative song titles – such as “Cock Party 2 (Better Than The First)” and “John "The Rock" Cena, Can You Smell What the Undertaker” – this is a 12-track album with some meaningful undertones within the lyrics. Pleasantly surprised, I fell in love with this album which is a mixture of noise music they’re experimenting with and some other ballad-y feeling songs. The song that really caught my attention was “I Don’t Understand But I Luv U,” which was a comment a fan sent them on one of their lives, and Woozi, a member of the band, exclaimed how good that would be as a lyric for their upcoming EP. Black Country, New Road - Live at Bush Hall The band’s first project after the former frontman, Isaac Wood, left for mental health reasons. Given the massive acclaim (both critical and personal) towards their first two albums particularly revolving around Isaac’s powerful evocation and brilliant lyrics, I was a little nervous upon first listen. I had nothing to worry about. The opening track, “Up Song” powerfully instills the band's passion for both music and each other, proudly boasting “Look at what we did together, BCNR Friends Forever”, a reflection of the album. Very soft, feminine energy which I personally thrive in. She talks about subjects most women in their mid twenty’s deal with- getting old, cutting off friends, people with ulterior motives. She pairs it with a jazz/indie sound that is very unique. The verses are emotional and tense, and the chorus feels like such a sweet release. The way the bassline and drums work so well together and give this ballad a groove like no other…I think it’s mad cool. And even though it’s so classically R&B, I think the production and the arrangement of the song is refreshing, the way he approaches it. The Canadian heavy metal band, posed of Courtney LaPlante, Mike Stringer, Zev Rose, and Josh Gilbert, Spiritbox formed back in 2017 but really took off in 2020 at the early start of the COVID-19 pandemic - the band’s genre is hard to pinpoint but there are clear prog metal influences. “The Void” highlights this perfectly and introduces some slight electronic aspects and I find it pairs well with LaPlante’s vocals & the heavy instruments. I am a big fan of the ‘over the radio’ sound for the vocals, giving on otherwise clean performance some distortion before going clean for the chorus. This song kind of reminds me of Marty Casey and The Love Hammers, a group whose unfortunately only ever had two releases. But some of my love for them lives on through “Glass” by Forest Green. I’ve wanted to love dark/industrial techno for a while now, but every time I try to get into it, I stop short. It just hasn’t clicked for me. So I was absolutely thrilled to hear the work of Eric Raven. The New Jersey native cites influences such as Code Orange, Nine Inch Nails, and Depeche Mode with the mission statement of bringing together the disparate genres of metal, hardcore, and techno. And that’s pretty much what the artist does. Raven is impressive in their craftwork. What really stood out to me while listening to the debut singles they released in 2022 was the diversity of the sound. You have a track like “Something I Can Never Have,” which is a straight-up hardcore banger. But then there are also songs like “Ascension (The Gate),” which are almost entirely dark techno. Each of their tracks features esoteric samples, low-key bridges, crushing breakdowns, or melodic interludes that keep the music compelling throughout. The result is a short, but sweet collection of incredibly refreshing music that left me wanting more. A little while later they found themselves jamming together frequently, and when they decided they were finally going to become a band, they clearly decided on the name Strawberry Reproduction. They have been together since, going on about 7 years now, and have released two singles currently available everywhere and a long lost EP they feel they have grown out of since recording it early in highschool. When I asked about their musical influences, they said their earlier influences were harcore bands such as Norma Jean, Everytime I Die, and The Charlotte. More recently they “pepper in” their influences so that not one specific sound sticks out more than the other. As they are from Athens Georgia, they play around that area and are influenced by the punk heavy culture that surrounds them. Samuel says they are “punk first”, but they usually let the heavier metal genres influence a lot of their writing as well, but consider themselves “punk focused”. We all even joked about how Metal hasn’t really changed in sound for a while now, and how the peak early 2010’s metalcore bands are still festival headliners today. So it’s so refreshing to hear a group that doesn’t confine themselves to ‘one’ genre and just make the music they love to hear regardless of where it falls on the genre spectrum. I am personally a big fan of Strawberry Reproduction since discovering them, and I am excited to see there are artists out there still changing the boundaries of “genre” and will make music they love regardless of labels or genre restrictions. Shake’s sound has become far more refined in her sophomore album, opening up the listener into her emotions all while creating an atmospheric, intrinsic, and unorthodox record. You Can’t Kill Me is a live performance to behold as well, as Shake brings her all to really plunge the listener into the album, even performing the whole album before it was officially released. The Mike Dean production is evident all over the record, thanks to her partnership with G.O.O.D. Music. The experimenting with various sounds, meshing all the bells and whistles for this is kinda irresistible. With songs that move you such as “Sparrow” or “Change”, you cant help but overcome with emotion. There’s also songs that just make you want to dance and be silly. Song like “simulation swarm” or “spud infinity”. Having released only a few singles and EPs, their sound was clear - surfy, vintage, reverb-dripping, and straight out of mid-century America, but with a twist. They’re entirely female-fronted, and they certainly have shown their talent with this LP. With the addition of new drummer Sam Maloney, their sound has been retained, but taken to the next level. Harnessing their energy into contained explosive bursts, each song on the LP shows off their raucous and wild sound.
